It is a common misconception that interns have ample free time on the weekends. You may think we lounge at the pool and work on our tans while sipping piña coladas, but that’s not the case. This past weekend, Nico, Alyssa, and Megan participated in The Ad Club’s Brand-a-thon, where nine creative teams from eight agencies around Boston had 72 hours to create a soup-to-nuts campaign for local start-up companies. Fueled by pizza and several movie breaks, both of Hill Holliday’s teams produced two killer campaigns for Covvet and Cocomamma. While Cocomomma's campaign focused on everything that isn't inside the organic treat, Covvet's campaign was centered around price bots who price-shop so you don't have to.
After working 72 long hours over the weekend, on Tuesday the four of us were pleasantly surprised by gifts from Karen Kaplan - Herschel duffle bags, to be exact! With our new bags in tow, we met with Karen and she told us about her “started form the bottom now I’m here” story. A great one, at that. When she speaks, the room instantly goes quiet. We all know that her experience in the business and her pride in Hill Holliday are matched by no one. Her two most valuable pieces of advice to us were “Go where you’re celebrated, not tolerated,” and “Unless you’re dead, you’re doing all right.” So it looks like we’re doing just fine.
But here we are, week four and knee deep in work. I don’t think any of us is complaining, though. This is work we like. We huddle around desks, eat food from meetings we’re not invited to, and generate great ideas (brain food really makes a difference).
Maybe I’ll actually go to the beach this weekend.
